Because the axis of the Earth is tilted to 23.5 degrees, and because the Earth is nearly round, sunlight will strike the Earth's surface at different angles, in different places, and in defferent times.
This activity is designed to explore how changes in the angle of incoming sunlight affect the way objects (such as the Earth's surface) become heated.  Remember, these temperature differences are IMPORTANT in maintaining the Earth's temperature.
