"The massive blocks need to be broken to appropriate sizes. This shaping has to be done by using hand tools. A groove is worn along the surface by striking with a hard rock."

"Somehow we need to apply a force from the center of this block outward to separate it into two pieces."

The wedge is a simple machine which is used to change the direction of a force. It allows us to apply a force down onto the wedge and the force is redirected to the sides.

A wedge is inserted into the groove and a force is applied from above. Will the shape (proportion) of the wedge make a difference in its effectiveness? Record your prediction in your lab packet.
